Slackerly: The Second Kiss

Yup, that's right: today I'm being totally slack and posting an excerpt for you to read :) This is the second of the kisses I mentioned in my May Review. It's rough, it's totally unedited - but it's kinda fun.

For those couple of you reading on CC, consider this your *spoiler warning* ;) Add to this also a *sappiness warning*, and a *really rough first draft warning*. There. I think you're all set :D

“Oh Jess.” John swept her into his arms. “I was so worried. When you weren’t responding...” He shook his head. “I didn’t know if you couldn’t hear me, or if you’d been injured, or what.”

Jess hugged him tight, weaving her fingers in the fabric of his shirt, clinging to him as tears streamed down her face. “I’m fine,” she said, voice still unsteady. “Honest.” She released on hand long enough to swipe away some tears. “I’m fine.”

He stared at her intently, as though just by looking he could see into her soul and assess the extent of her hurt. A shiver passed over her and she caught the faint whiff of chi; perhaps he could see into her soul, at least a little.

He exhaled, drew her tightly against him and mumbled into her hair. “I’m so relieved. I thought... I thought I might never see you again.”

Through the tears and mucous that dampened both her face and his shirt, Jess smiled. He’d been worried. He loved her, he’d said so, and he’d been worried. “I’m here,” she whispered hoarsely. “I’m here now, and I can hear you perfectly well.”

“In that case...” John pressed his fingers against her chin and tilted her face up towards his. “In that case...” He smiled, a quiet, shy smile that Jess still wasn’t quite used to seeing. “I love you,” he whispered.

Jess shivered again, but this time it was thoroughly pleasant, and as he bent to kiss her she finally felt the tension melt, and drip away.

Altogether now - Awww!
